CHEF HELPS DINER COOK UP PROPOSAL

- KATHRYN WILLIAMS Reporter kathryn.williams@walesonline.co.uk

IT’S one thing being surprised for your birthday with a trip to Jamie Oliver’s restaurant but lucky Louise Morgan had an even bigger shock when the celebrity chef helped her partner Chris Guy pop the big question in front of a room full of diners.

The couple, who live in Rhydyfelin, near Pontypridd, were at an event in Jamie’s Italian in Cardiff where Oliver and pal Gennaro Contaldo were cooking dishes from the pair’s new Channel 4 cookery show, Jamie Cooks Italy, and Chris had secretly arranged for the proposal to take place during the evening.

Louise said: “I was a little bit suspicious when Jamie pulled Chris’ name out during a raffle. I said ‘something is going on.’”

The raffle was in fact staged so Chris, a service adviser at a car dealership, could go down on one knee and ask Louise, 30, to marry him.

“I’d managed to keep the restaurant booking a secret, as it was a surprise for Louise’s birthday,” said Chris, also 30.

“Jamie’s is one of our favourite restaurants and we love Italian food. Every time she asked about her birthday I’d just have to keep the plans to myself. I sent the Cardiff branch a message on Twitter and they got back to me and asked me how I’d like to do it and they really helped me out with that too.

“When I spoke to him and he handed me the mic... to be fair it was a brilliant night.”

Louise, who has been with Chris for five and a half years, added: “It was really out of character for Chris, and I was a bit stunned for a second but then I said ‘yes.’

“Jamie was great, really lovely. We didn’t have a raffle prize but they did give us a bottle of champagne.”

With the couple’s phone ringing off the hook all morning they haven’t made any plans for the wedding yet.

We think Jamie Oliver should offer to do the catering just to complete the happy story!
