Flynn’s thoughts back on league after cup collapse

-

MIKE Flynn is expecting Newport County to bounce back against Port Vale in League Two this afternoon (3pm) following their Carabao Cup exit on Tuesday.

The Exiles found themselves 2-0 down inside four minutes against League One outfit Oxford United. Gavin Whyte added a third for the U’s in injury time to send County crashing out.

Despite the disappointment, Flynn expects to see County continue their fine league form that has seen them take 10 points from 12 since their opening-day defeat at Mansfield Town.

“We lost against a team who started better than us and scored two goals in four minutes,” said Flynn.

“Doesn’t matter who you are playing against if you concede that early it is always going to be an uphill challenge.

“I’ve got a good group of players who are determined to do well for the football club and for themselves and we do a lot of work on preparing the team to be right.

“It’s always tough going there and it’s going to be a tough game.

“I’ve been there plenty of times as a player and went there last season as manager, it’s a huge pitch and hopefully we take advantage of that. “I’m looking for a reaction.” Flynn will be able to call on captain Andrew Crofts after he returned to firstteam action while the rested Joe Day is expected to come back, but Antoine Semenyo is a doubt along with Matty Dolan and Mark Harris.

However, Flynn will be hoping to call on new Bristol City loanee Cameron Pring – if international clearance allows.

“He’s left-sider, he can play left midfield, left wing back or left back,” Flynn added. “He’s very quick, strong and has a good left foot.

“He’ll give us that balance on that left side, which I think we needed. He gives us more options.”

Port Vale are yet to pick up a point on the road this season, but are enjoying home comfort having started with two wins from two.
