Jailed killer hid phone up his backside

A HOMESICK killer was found with a phone hidden up his backside which he used to call his mum.

Convicted killer Talos Miller, 29, had to be wrestled to the floor by prison officers when they detected a phone in his cell.

Cardiff Crown Court heard the mobile was found lodged in his backside.

A SIM card was also found in his pocket at Parc Prison in Bridgend.

Miller, who has spent a decade behind bars for the manslaughter of David Stimpson in Nottingham, claimed he only wanted to call his mum.

David Pugh, prosecuting, said: “The phone was not used for any criminal activity.

“He had called his mother in Manchester because it was cheaper than the prison phones.”

His defence barrister, Jonathan Webb, said: “His strongest mitigation is his guilty plea.”

Miller has 23 previous convictions for 65 offences but was jailed in 2008 after he left Mr Stimpson to die when he robbed and then punched the 39-year-old.

He was given an indeterminate sentence after admitting manslaughter.

His victim died of a serious brain injury and was found in a pool of blood by police.

At the time of the trial the court heard that Miller, who was then 19, had earlier spotted his victim in a pub wearing a gold chain, and told a friend: “I’m having that.”

The sentencing judge in the case told Miller he was a “violent young predator”.

In the latest hearing, Judge Jeremy Jenkins added 16 months to Miller’s already lengthy sentence for the phone offence.

He said: “There was no evidence that the phone was being used for criminal activity.

“But mobile phones in prison is a growing problem – especially at Parc – so much so that they now have to refer incidences of mobile phones to the police.”

Figures released by the Prison Service and Ministry of Justice last month showed that prisoners in Wales appear to be increasingly keeping in contact illegally with the outside world by phone.

As we reported two weeks ago, there were 154 incidents where mobile phones were discovered in Parc Prison in the 12 months to March this year, compared to 102 the previous year.

Cardiff Prison also had more mobile phone discoveries – totalling 52 incidents – compared to the previous year.
