Man drank bottle of whisky and smashed out girlfriend’s teeth

-

A MAN strangled his terrified girlfriend and knocked out two of her front teeth after drinking an entire bottle of whisky.

Nigel Kelly punched the woman to her face, neck and arms, as well as placing his hands over her mouth, pressing her face into a mattress and threatening to kill her.

Cardiff Crown Court heard he shouted: “I should have f***ing smashed you ages ago.”

Bethan Evans, prosecuting, said the incident happened on August 25 at Connaught Road in Roath, Cardiff.

The court heard Kelly had been in a relationship with Tracy Moore for nearly 10 years and they had lived together for about three years.

Prosecutors said Ms Moore spent the day with a friend and got home at 11pm – about half an hour before the defendant. She noticed he was under the influence of alcohol and described his eyes as being “half open”.

The court heard Kelly drank an entire bottle of whisky over the next four to five hours. Ms Evans said: “As he drank, he became more aggressive.”

Prosecutors said the complainant asked him to quieten down, thinking of the neighbours, but he responded: “F*** the neighbours. It’s my flat. I’ll do what I want.”

The court heard Ms Moore wanted to go to sleep, but the defendant banged a worktop and shouted: “I should have f***ing smashed you ages ago.”

Prosecutors said Kelly threw her on the bed and punched her face and neck as she shouted at him to stop.

The court heard Kelly backed away and Ms Moore managed to get up and ring the police.

Ms Evans said: “As she was speaking to the police, she realised her two bottom front teeth were missing.”

The complainant was left “aching all over” with blurred vision in her left eye, a large red lump above her right eye, a swollen wrist and marks to the back of her neck. Police officers attended and took Ms Moore to hospital.

Kelly was arrested when he returned to the property and answered “no comment” to all of the questions put to him in his police interview.

Prosecutors argued it was a “sustained attack”, which lasted for between 10 and 15 minutes.

The court heard Kelly had been before the courts for 73 previous offences, including battery, as well as dishonesty and drug-related offences.

Kelly, 43, from Connaught Road, admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm. Harry Baker, defending, asked for credit for his client’s guilty plea and for any jail term to be kept as short as possible.

Judge Rhys Rowlands defendant for 10 months.
