Students get lesson from the leaders

-

CARDIFF Metropolitan University were brought back down to earth as they were beaten 3-1 by Connah’s Quay Nomads at Cyncoed in the JD Welsh Premier League.

Met fell behind after seven minutes when Rob Hughes’ cross into a packed penalty area was dropped by keeper Alex Lang under pressure from Jay Owen, with Callum Morris turning the ball home.

The visitors doubled their advantage after 24 minutes when Ryan Wignall’s through ball put Declan Poole racing in on goal and he slotted it past Lang.

Met hit back on 31 minutes after a spell of pressure. It came as the visitors failed to deal with a long throw into the box from Dan Spencer which was flicked on to Rhys Thomas, who smashed home from close range.

But Met had their hopes of a comeback snuffed out on the hour mark when Andy Owens nodded in at the back post to make sure of all three points for the visitors.

The win took the Nomads back to the top and they are once again two points clear of The New Saints, who had temporarily gone top after they proved far too strong for Carmarthen Town.

After a goalless first half at Richmond Park, TNS went on the rampage with goals from Jamie Mullen, Greg Draper and Kurtis Byrne who netted in injury time to wrap up a convincing 3-0 win.

Barry Town United’s impressive run came to a halt as Newtown beat them 2-0 thanks to a brace of goals by Joe Kenton with the Robins moving above Barry into third on goal difference.

Kenton netted in injury time at the end of each half.

His first came as the hosts broke from a corner and after a long ball upfield was misjudged by Mike Lewis, Kenton was able to nip in behind him and fire home.

He made sure of the points late on by scoring from a narrow angle.

Llanelli Town remain bottom despite a 2-1 victory at Llandudno. Aberystwyth Town went down 1-0 at Cefn Druids, while Bala Town snatched a point from a 2-2 draw at Caernarfon Town.
