TWO runners died after completing yesterday’s Cardiff Half Marathon.

Organisers made the tragic announcement after the conclusion of the race.

The two men, aged 25 and 32, suffered cardiac arrests at the end of the race. Both were treated at a medical facility which had been set up at the finish line.

They were both taken by ambulance to the University Hospital of Wales where both later died. Next of kin have been informed.

Run 4 Wales chief executive Matt Newman said: “This is a terrible tragedy for the families. Our deepest sympathies go out to their family and friends.

“The emergency services reacted to this terrible situation with great speed and professionalism. Everyone connected with the race is devastated They unfortunately become the first fatalities in the 15-year history of the race.

“Since Run 4 Wales took over managing the event in 2012, there have been 116,049 finishers in what has grown to become the second biggest half marathon in the UK. Both runners were immediately attended to by the medical emergency team on the finish line. Both were then taken to University Hospital Wales, Heath, Cardiff where they later died.

“No further statement will be made at this time.”

Thousands of runners had taken part in the 15th annual event.

The route includes iconic city landmarks, going from Cardiff Castle, passing Cardiff City Stadium, crossing Cardiff Bay barrage and heading north to Roath Park Lake before returning to the civic centre to the finish line.

This year, 19.057 people started the race.

Hundreds of people shared condolences with the mens families after the news was confirmed.

Craig Smith wrote on the Wales Online Facebook page. “So sad to hear this. It was an amazing event and sadly two families won’t get to celebrate the achievement of their loved ones. Thoughts are with their families.”

Liz Bushell added: “So so sorry to hear this, really sad news. My thoughts go to their families bless them”.

Jacovia Downing added: “So sad. These runners died hero’s, running to raise money for their chosen charities, how tragic loosing two runners.

“They would have been feeling so proud to finish the marathon in front of family/friends then moments later they are gone.

“Thoughts and prayers are with family/friends and anyone who witnessed this today. Tomorrow’s never promised... make sure you tell your family members you love them and give them a kiss or hug each day.”

Neil Demuth said: “That’s awful news. My thoughts are firstly with their families, so sad! Secondly to all of the organisation today which was first class. Great team work and I’m sure you did [your] utmost.”

Andy Sangster paid tribute to the men on Twitter. “Such sad news, condolences to the family and friends of both runners and to the first aiders and medical staff that attended to them. May they rest in peace”.

Owen Jones added: “Very sad to hear, thought are with both the families and the organisers”.

Amy Patterson added: “I think it’s very important to note how very rare this is, and what terrible luck it is that two have happened at the same event. It’s incredibly unusual and needs stating so people are aware that actually running this distance is, most of the time, completely safe.”
