It’s high-fives all round as Rocks get off to solid start this season

- WITH CARL FIELD

ST PETER’S are sitting pretty at the top of Two East Central after a stunning start to the season.

The Roath-based Rocks made it five wins out of five on Saturday as they recorded a 22-7 victory at Abercynon to maintain their 100 per cent record.

Lloyd James put in a man of the match performance as he scored twice with Jack Donaldson getting their other try.

“We dominated most of the game,” said club official David Meredith.

“Abercynon were quite strong in the first half, but I think fitness took over in the second half and they were blowing a bit and we took control. It was a very good game.”

A fifth win on the bounce means St Peter’s are three points clear of Cilfynydd at the top having already beaten them, too. Meredith admitted the start has surprised even them after last season’s seventh-placed finish – but was in no doubt what that was down to.

“Our new coach Dai Griffiths, he’s the inspiration for it really,” continued Meredith.

“We felt it was time for a change and he’s come in and been fantastic, really good; the boys have really taken to him.

“He’s been a breath of fresh air and we’ve taken off pretty well. We also had some new players come in at the beginning of the season and a couple of boys come up from the youth as well.

“It’s a fairly young side with a few old heads in there, it’s a really good side. They are playing for one another as a team and you can’t really pick anybody out.

“We would’ve been quite happy with finishing mid-table this season, giving the youngsters a chance to blend and then go for it next season.

“But as things are working out at the moment, we’ve done really well.”

The season began with an eyecatching 36-19 win at Cilfynydd before home wins over Barry and Heol y Cyw as well as triumphing at Llantwit Fardre. Meredith added: “The first game at the season at Cilfynydd was definitely the best one.

“They are a tough side to beat and considering the performance we had up there last year when we were beaten convincingly.

“I don’t think they have been beaten since so that was a very, very good win for us up there.

“They’re lying second in the league as well and I think any of the top four in the league can beat each other on any given day.

“We’re very pleased with the start to the season.” The Rocks’ only defeat this season was a narrow one and came in the first round of the WRU National Plate 25-22 at the hands of higher division outfit Mountain Ash – who play in One East Central.

Next up for Griffiths’ men is a home clash with Llanharan on Saturday when they will be looking to make it six wins out of six.

Llanharan are currently bottom of the table having one only once this season, losing their other four league games.
