Q

I’M painting the tiles on my fireplace and would like to know what preparation and paint would be suitable.

A

TRY Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Plus. This is a primer and sealer and has good adhesion properties. Just sugar-soap the tiles first to remove any soot from the fire. Once you have applied the Bulls Eye, just choose a top coat. I’d avoid gloss and go for eggshell or satinwood instead.

Q

I AM getting lots of condensation on double-glazed windows and black damp on surrounding walls where the windows are fixed. Have you got any suggestions please? Vernon, by email

A

THE window and wall must be cold for condensation to form. You need better insulated windows – the best are so highly insulated they never get cold on the inside even in winter. Try Polycell 3-in-1 mould killer on the black patches.

Q

WE have an imitation coal gas fire, but the glass front panel has become cloudy. Soapy water has no effect. What would you advise?

A

USE a paper towel soaked in brown vinegar and stick it flat over the glass. Leave for 15 minutes and then remove and rinse.

Fabric/carpet spot cleaner also works.
