HUNDREDS of dogs braved the stormy weather by taking part in Barry Island’s annual Schnauzerfest.

The event, which is the biggest of its kind in the UK, welcomed more than 200 Schnauzers to the seaside town despite the poor weather conditions.

Although organisers were expecting around 300 pooches to take part, an impressive 220 turned up on the day.

Kicking off from 10.45am on Sunday, October 14, Schnauzerfest is an annual charity fundraising event which gathers dogs and their owners together for walks up and down the country.

The Barry event took place from Whitmore Bay to Jackson’s Bay.

Money raised by the event goes to the Diana Brimblecombe Animal Rescue Centre (DBARC) which helps dogs that have been saved from terrible backgrounds.

On the day, the event raised £848.37 for DBARC and more was donated online. One of the organisers, Nick Rutter, was happy with the turnout despite the weather.

He said: “It was very wet but we still had about 220 Schnauzers there today. Lydia Williams and Anne Williams with Zeeza, Huzzah, Madog and Hope

“We expected 300 but 220 is a brilliant turnout. They all got a bit soggy but had a fabulous time walking to Jackson’s Bay and back to Marco’s Cafe.” Last year, more than 320 Schnauzers and their owners took part in the event in a record-breaking turnout. Nick added: “It was really good, everyone had fun. It was a bit damp, but no trouble.” “All the Schnauzers had a great time. “Thank you to everyone who came to support our fundraising efforts to restore the sight of Schnauzers rescued by Diana Brimblecombe Animal Rescue Centre in Berkshire.”

This event took place along the coastal path at North Dock and raised £172 for the DBARC charity. For more details visit the Schnauzerfest website.
