Motorbike knocks boy, 11, off his bicycle

-

AN 11-year-old boy was taken to hospital after a motorcyclist knocked him off his bike.

Tyler Smith was cycling along Cardiff’s New Road in Rumney on Tuesday when he was knocked off his bike by a motorcycle.

Tyler’s mother Amanda, 37, said the incident has left him “shaken up” and has put him off cycling for life.

Ms Smith, from Trowbridge, said her son was cycling down New Road by the Mardy Bridge when he was hit.

Tyler, who cycles regularly with his friends, was coming onto New Road from Newport Road.

She said: “They passed him going the one way and a van went after them. He looked and nothing was coming and they U-turned and came back up the road so I don’t know how it happened.

“He said he didn’t know where they came from but he said he was looking.

“There were two motorbikes but only one hit him.

“Tyler said the one stopped before speeding up and driving off.

“They just left him.”

Tyler had a fractured elbow and a dislocated knee. Ms Smith said he has also been left with a few bumps and bruises.

She said a woman arrived at the scene and called Tyler’s mother to tell her what happened. She stayed with Tyler until his parents and the emergency services arrived.

“He was on the floor but he managed to crawl to the side of the road,” said Ms Smith. “He’s devastated. He never wants to go on his bike again.”

Ms Smith said she was very thankful to the woman who stopped to help but was upset that the motorcyclist didn’t.

“I’m devastated that someone didn’t stop – absolutely devastated,” she said.

“If you’re going to speed off just call an ambulance – just stop and call an ambulance.

“A normal person would stop. How can you leave someone in the middle of the road?”

A spokeswoman for South Wales Police said: “At 6.53pm last night (Tuesday), South Wales Police received information from the ambulance service that an 11-year-old boy had been knocked off his bike on New Road, Rumney.

“It is believed two motorcyclists were involved in the collision but left the scene.”

Anyone with information is asked to call South Wales Police on 101.
