BEST OF THE REST

AMBULANCE BBC1, 9pm

TENSE from the off, this Bafta award-winning series, following the incredible work of the North West Ambulance Service, is back.

Over a hot, busy summer, the service received an average of 4,000 calls every day. We hear snippets: “He’s getting blue,” “I’ve been stabbed,” and “A car has driven into five pedestrians?”

This is the story behind the sirens as staff prioritise calls and paramedics race to incidents involving the frail and elderly, newborns, as well as traffic accidents and drug taking.

Gari, inset, explains what happens when unfortunately a patient dies.

He says: “I’ve made tea for people, taken dogs for a walk, I’ve had someone say to me, ‘Will you put his cardigan on because he’s going to get cold’. Your focus switches from the patient to the relatives that are left.”

NEW GIRL E4, 9.30pm

HIDDEN away on E4, if you haven’t found this US comedy gem already, tune in now. Every 20-minute episode manages to raise a laugh and pull on the heartstrings too.

It’s season seven and the gang of young friends are growing up. It’s about three years since we last saw them – Jess (Zooey Deschanel) and Nick (Jake Johnson), pictured, the ‘Ross and Rachel’ on-off couple of the show, had finally got together. Now they return from a European book tour promoting Nick’s novel The Pepperwood Chronicles. But will there be wedding bells?

Meanwhile, Cece and Schmidt celebrate their daughter’s birthday with a party, at which Jess runs into her ex, Russell (guest star Dermot Mulroney).

In other news, Jess has a nose ring and Schmidt has a moustache – one that you’ll hope doesn’t make it through the rest of the series.
