Let the games begin

- With Sara Wallis

IT’S game on down under as the Invictus Games 2018 gets underway with this preview show ahead of tomorrow’s grand opening ceremony from the Sydney Opera House. Prince Harry launched the games for wounded military veterans in 2014 and it’s gone from strength to strength, with more than 500 competitors gathering in Australia from across the globe.

Alex Jones and JJ Chalmers, himself a former Royal Marine who was injured in Afghanistan and went on to become an Invictus medallist, host the BBC’s coverage.

And of course, we’ll be getting lots of opportunities to spot Prince Harry and Meghan – and her recently-announced baby bump – as they support everyone from the sidelines. A right royal cheerleading squad.

As well as coverage of events like archery, basketball, powerlifting, swimming and wheelchair rugby, expect to also hear stories from some of the 72 people competing from the UK Armed Forces team.

Alex Jones says of the eight-day sporting spectacle: “I can’t wait to get to Sydney and learn more about all of the inspirational stories of the competitors.

“I’m so excited to be working alongside JJ Chalmers and to be right in the middle of the action. I think the games are going to be full of both humbling and inspirational moments not to be missed.”

JJ adds: “Have no doubt – Invictus Sydney is going to be awesome! If we are able to channel even a small bit of the energy and spirit of Invictus into people’s living rooms they’re in for an enjoyable and powerful watch.”
