Barry aiming to maintain their early-season promise

WELSH PREMIER

-

BARRY Town will be looking to maintain their top-three place in the JD Welsh Premier League tonight when they entertain bottom-of-the-table Llanelli at Jenner Park (7.30pm).

Gavin Chesterfield was awarded the September Welsh Premier Manager of the Month award this week after his side won four out of their five games.

A Chris Hugh goal was enough to give Barry their latest success, a 1-0 win over Carmarthen Town last Saturday to make it six wins, one draw and three defeats from their 10 games played so far and have them dreaming of a European return.

The words European football would have been seen as a pipe dream fiveand-a-half seasons ago when Barry were in Division Three of the Welsh League after being put into administration.

Chesterfield’s team, on and off the pitch, have revitalised the Jenner Park club and they are now back amongst the cream of the Welsh Premier.

Andy Hill’s visitors came back into the top flight this season and they are also a club with terrific credentials at this level and have enjoyed some fine European exploits. The Reds are bottom of the pile at the moment. but are far from cannon fodder and will believe they can get something from their visit.

On-loan Newport striker Momodou Touray played in Wales Under-21s’ win over Switzerland in midweek and he will spearhead the Linnets’ attack this evening.

A 500-plus crowd is forecast and a home win would keep Chesterfield’s team in a terrific third place for another week at least.

Cardiff Met University are again on the road this weekend when they travel to Cefn Druids tomorrow (2.30pm).

Christian Edwards’ Archers moved back into the top six last weekend with a 2-0 away victory at Llanelli, with goals from Harry Owen and Elliott Evans.

The Met travel to ‘The Rock’ the home of Cefn Druids, having played there once this year already when they suffered defeat in the Europa League play-off final last season.

The home team suffered a 3-1 defeat at Connah’s Quay in midweek and are trying to recapture the form which saw them reach Europe in the summer.

After last week’s away win, the Cyncoed students will do well to return to Cardiff with a point.
