DUSKY GREY

- WITH DAVID OWENS

Introduce us to Dusky Grey – who is in the band?

Hello hello, we’re Catrin Hopkins and Gethin Williams.

How did you get together?

We actually met online – which is weird considering we had so many friends in common and we live 20 minutes apart. But we were both making music individually and we decided to write together. Geth was working on a collaboration album and we just clicked. Haven’t left each other’s sides since. We live together, work together, share a bathroom – nightmare!

How would you describe your music to the uninitiated?

We’re always aiming to make music people can sing or dance along to with as many hooks as possible. So let’s say, relatable, feel-good, straight-up pop music.

What is your earliest musical memory?

Catty – my earliest musical memory is dancing around the kitchen with my parents. They would always throw parties and put on ’70s/’80s music. I knew I was done for as soon as I found a Fleetwood Mac CD.

Geth – I had a guitar at age six that I had no idea how to play but I pretended well.

Who was your earliest musical influence?

Geth – Bob Marley was mine. I always felt like I could rely on his music emotionally. It always made me feel good and it still does. Catty – Come to think of it – I just remember looking for the blonde singers and pretending I was them. From Baby Spice to Christina Aguilera, I just used to watch them and copy what they did.

What made you want to pick up an instrument and play?

Geth – I was a huge fan of Ed Sheeran when he first came about. Watching him do his thing was a huge inspiration for me so I asked my parents for an upgraded guitar on my birthday. I haven’t stopped playing since.

What was the first record you bought?

Geth – I bought Bob Marley’s ‘Legend’. I became obsessed with it, I still listen to it today.

Catty – The first time my parents let me go shopping with my friends I bought ‘Take a Bow’ by Rihanna from HMV.

What was the first gig you attended?

Geth – I remember watching Rudimental at age 16. But I’m sure there was a few others before that. Catty – I saw Girls Aloud. I thought they were brilliant.

What’s the best gig/s you’ve been to?

Geth – I watched Jack Savoretti and thought he had a great voice with great songs.

Catty – I saw The Lumineers, Stevie Nicks and Tom Petty at British Summer Time last year and I’ve not been the same since.

Who would be your dream artiste to work with?

We’re both loving Major Lazer at the moment. Working with them would be a dream.

What’s for the future?

We’ve got a lot of songs in the pipeline that we’re excited about. I hope that people continue to want to listen to them.
