It’s all go for Joe as he produces Greece lightning
CARDIFF’S former World Sea Angling champion Joe Arch travelled with international ladies angler Karen Hancock to compete in the “Respect the Sea” international in Paralia Skotinas, Greece.
Joe’s years of experience of fishing with the Welsh team using light fishing tackle in the Mediterranean, paid off with him winning both days of the competition.
On day one, he netted a total weight of 1.36kg consisting of 11 fish made up of gilthead bream and red mullet. The second day, his catch was 0.9kg with 24 fish comprising of Palometas and Gars.
With large spring tides featuring in the middle of the week, several local anglers targeted the Sand Spit at Sully in the hope of catching one of the largest species of ray in the Bristol Channel.
A number of Blonde Rays were caught between the 11lb to 15lb mark. But there were two particularly good specimens caught by Newport and Barry anglers Dave Forrest and Andy McFarlane.
Both caught personal best fish of 21lb 4ozs & 21lb 12ozs respectively.
All fish were safely returned to the water.
Penarth SAC fished their local beach and pier. In first place was Adam James with two conger eels for 7lb 4ozs he was fishing at Lavernock Point. Second was Bob Styes fishing on the pier with a conger eel of 1lb 10 ozs, while third spot went to Dean Thomas with a dogfish.
Next week’s match is again at the local beach and pier. Booking in at the pier hut at 2.30pm fishing 3.307.30pm.
Gwent SAC fished at Sully. In first place was Nev Evans with one conger eel and one codling for 6.12 kilos. Second spot went toe was Neil Owen with two conger eels for 2.54 kilos, while Craig Maddox was third with two dogfish and a conger eel for 2.28kilos.
Next week’s match is at Brixham fishing 9am-5pm booking in at the main Bixham Harbour car park at 8am.
Newport SAC fished St Brides. The winner was Roger Guscott with one conger for 2.50kg. Runner-up was Christian Tanner with one conger for 2.50kg and Roy Tapper’s two congers for 2.11kg took third spot.
The next competition is on Saturday at Sudbrook. Fishing times are 1.15-7.15pm. Book- in at Black Rock car park one hour before the start and memberships now being taken for the new season.
Bargoed SAC fished at measured length match at Cardiff foreshore. Jason Ward won with 3.5 metres consisting of conger reels, whiting and rays. Lloyd Summers was second with 2.79 metres consisting of conger eels, while third place went to Phil Jehu with 2.58 metres consisting of bass, whiting and rays.
South Wales Sea Anglers hold their monthly match on Saturday (12.20pm). Booking-in for the match is at the Ship Inn Barry at noon with weigh in at The Ship by 6pm. Entry fee for non members is £7. Limits are Bendericks Rock to the Bull Nose at Cold Knap.
Beaches in and around Llandudno North Wales will host the 35th World Championships this coming week.
In conjunction with the Welsh Federation Of Sea Anglers,(WFSA) Conwy County Borough Council have been two years in the planning of this top international fishing competition in the world.
Males and female teams from Europe, Africa and South America will do battle for medals over a four match period.
