Thomas snub ‘frustrating’

-

FORMER Wales captain Dai Young has reacted to his son Thomas being omitted yet again from the Wales squad by admitting he finds the situation ‘hugely frustrating.’

Young junior was passed over for the autumn internationals, with the likes of Dragons rookie Aaron Wainwright and veteran Dan Lydiate getting the call ahead of him.

This despite Sam Warburton’s retirement and injuries to key back-row stars like James Davies and Taulupe Faletau.

Wasps boss Young has largely kept his counsel throughout a period that has seen Thomas miss out on numerous occasions despite stellar form for Wasps in the Gallagher Premiership and European Champions Cup.

But he told the Coventry Live website: “Was I surprised? No. Was it frustrating for him? Yes, it is,”

“The first thing I say to that is fair play to him, he never says anything, he just gets his head down and gets on with it.

“I find it hugely frustrating. I can’t see why he hasn’t made the squad. It just seems to me that it will always be anybody bar him.

“If you look at the last three of four squads, they’re either trying somebody new or bringing somebody back, it will just be the case of it’s never going to be him.

“That’s how I feel, I look at team selection and we all see different things in different players.

“When they’re all fit they are a formidable group. The back row in Wales is, there’s lots there.

“But there’s been two or three squads now where there’s been lots of injuries, and they’ve brought guys in from nowhere to give them a go and bring people back after three years.”

“You just can’t help but feel it will never be his opportunity.”

Young was capped in last summer’s tour matches against Tonga and Samoa, but now finds himself well down the pecking order.
