Homes planned on school site
PLANS have been unveiled for more than 200 homes at a former Cardiff school site.
Cardiff Living wants to build 214 homes at the former Rumney High School in Newport Road, which is currently being demolished.
The development would be made up of 65 affordable homes, including a 44-bed independent living apartment block for people aged over 55, and 21 two and three bed homes.
The remaining 149 general market homes will be a mix of two, three, four and five-bed properties.
Land has also been set aside for a new supermarket.
A planning application has now been submitted for the development, and a consultation will be held until November 29.
Originally, the developer had planned to reopen a footpath between Manorbier Crescent and the site.
But the developer has said it will now keep the footpath closed following a “vociferous response” from residents and concerns from South Wales Police this would promote antisocial behaviour, burglary and “provide extra escape routes for those who have committed an offence”. A statement by Asbri Planning, on behalf of Cardiff Living, said the planned older people’s housing would “allow residents who have been living isolated lifestyles to return to living within the community, which in turn, will enable new residents to move into their previous dwellings, therefore easing the housing demand.
“With an ageing population, and a national shortfall in housing, developments such as this will free up muchneeded housing and will futureproof the housing system to accommodate the social care needs of an ageing population.”
Cardiff Living, a partnership between Cardiff Council and Wates Residential, aims to build 1,500 new homes between now and 2025.
It is also planning to build 98 new homes at the former Llanrumney High School.
The new £26m Eastern High, a replacement for the Llanrumney and Rumney high schools, opened earlier this year.
