Award-winning play to be staged at refugee centre
AN award-winning play will be performed at Cardiff’s Oasis Centre for refugees and asylum seekers.
The event has been organised as part of Night Out, an Arts Council of Wales programme that helps communities stage high quality arts productions.
Tony Award-winning play The Island by John Kani, Winston Ntshona and Athol Fugard, transports its audience to the notorious prison on Robben Island, South Africa – the place where Nelson Mandela was jailed for battling against apartheid.
The Island tells the story of brotherhood, racial segregation and the injustice of South Africa’s Apartheid laws and explores the struggle between the individual and the state.
It does so through the tales of Winston and John and asks how much pain does a state need to inflict before you fight it. Cardiffbased theatre company Fio is putting on the show on Friday, November 9.
The company celebrates individuality, tears down stereotypes and offers everybody a chance to make their mark in the world.
The Arts Council of Wales’ Night Out Community Touring Scheme has funded two projects and performances on this tour, enabling this celebrated play to perform to audiences that wouldn’t usually get involved with the arts.
Oasis helps refugees and asylum seekers to become part of the local community. The centre’s clients have helped organise the performance.
The Oasis Choir and Drummers will be performing, and traditional food from around the world will be on offer.
