IN the year that marks the centenary of the end of the First World War, Cardiff’s Field of Remembrance will open to the public at Cardiff Castle with a special service of remembrance on Wednesday.

The Field of Remembrance features more than 6,000 tributes from members of the public to servicemen and women, each carrying a personal message to someone who has lost their life during or after World War I.

The National Memorial Arboretum Field of Remembrance is one of six Royal British Legion fields located across the country which, between them, feature more than 100,000 crosses and commemorative markers each inscribed with an individual’s name.

Ant Metcalfe, Royal British Legion area manager for Wales, said: “We all owe the First World War generation, and the generations of the armed forces that have continued to serve, sacrifice and change our world since the First World War, a huge debt of gratitude and we hope that the public will take the opportunity to visit the Field of Remembrance to recognise their contribution and say thank you to those who gave their lives for the freedoms we enjoy today.”

Members of the public are encouraged to attend the opening service which starts at 10.30am on Wednesday.

The Field of Remembrance will be open for members of the public to visit and pay their respects until Saturday, November 17. CARDIFF’S main post office is set to close – before relocating to another branch in the new year.

Proposals are under way to move from the current store in Queens Arcade to the WHSmith store on Queen Street.

It will be known as Cardiff Post Office and will be run by WHSmith, with six serving positions and extended opening hours.

On Sundays, the store will be open from 11am to 5pm. Every other day, it will open between 9am and 5.30pm.

Under the proposals, the services at the new branch would remain the same, with the exception of a cash machine.

There will also be five self-serving kiosks.

A public consultation on the proposals has now started and will run until December 12.

It is proposed to open the new branch in March 2019.

Post Office’s Network and Sales Director Roger Gale said: “The vast majority of our 11,500 post offices, large and small, are successfully operated on a franchise basis with retail partners.

“We believe this is the best approach to keeping post offices in main shopping locations and at the heart of communities where they play an important role in local economies.

“We believe our proposal is the most effective way to secure the long-term viability of Post Office services for years to come.”
