Matthew Maynard will lead Glamorgan’s preparations for the 2019 season FORMER Glamorgan batsman Matthew Maynard has been appointed as the county’s interim head coach following the departure of former teammate Robert Croft last month.

The move comes as part of a major restructure process at the Welsh county, who have been subject to an independent review after a chastening 2018 campaign.

Former England cricket and Dragons rugby guru Huw Bevan conducted the review, the aftermath of which has seen chief executive Hugh Morris forgo his duties as director of cricket, as well as Croft’s exit.

Maynard will now lead Glamorgan’s preparations for the 2019 season with the recruitment process for a new director of cricket well under way. The county are accepting external applications for the role and will interview in December.

Maynard, 52, is a former captain and head coach at Glamorgan and rejoined the club last season as a consultant batting coach – after leaving his position as director of cricket at Somerset after three seasons with the club.

He has been a head coach in the Caribbean Premier League and with the Nashua Titans in South Africa. He enjoyed a successful first season with the Titans, winning the domestic fourday competition as well as the domestic T20 competition.

Maynard has also been an assistant coach to the England cricket team and was part of the coaching set up when England won the Ashes in 2005.

He said: “I’m delighted to take up the role as interim head coach. Glamorgan has always been my home, so when Hugh asked me to coach the team over the winter it was an opportunity I couldn’t turn down.

“We’ve had a couple of tough years but I’m very excited at the prospect of working with our talented bunch of players over the winter and I can’t wait to get started.”

Morris added: “Matt has a wealth of experience as a head coach and a real understanding of the club from his time here as both a player and a coach.

“He is highly respected at the club and in the wider cricketing community and has a proven track record of developing and improving young players.

“He’s the ideal person to work with our young Glamorgan Pathway players over the winter while we continue our search for a new director of cricket and head coach.”
