New census question plans to help support veterans
A NEW question could be added to the 2021 census to help understand the needs of veterans in the UK.
Ex-service personnel will be able to declare their military service under plans being considered in Wales, England and Scotland.
It is believed that information gathered may provide a better understanding of where veterans live and work so they can receive the right support.
The proposal is part of a package of measures being developed to support the veteran community.
The first ever UK-wide Strategy for our Veterans, jointly produced by the Welsh, UK and Scottish governments, was published yesterday.
It arrives just days after the countries marked 100 years since the end of the First World War on Armistice Day, November 11.
The strategy includes providing £10m for mental health care, previously announced by Chancellor Philip Hammond in his Budget.
Six areas where support for veterans is most needed over the next 10 years have been identified: community and relationships; employment and skills; health and well-being; finance and debt; housing; and, contact with the law.
Barriers and opportunities for veterans in these areas will be assessed to improve support and increase collaboration and co-ordination between services.
The Veterans’ Gateway, a consortium of organisations and armed forces charities, will trial a new outreach project through its 24/7 helpline service where veterans will be called to check on their wellbeing.
