No Velothon to be held next year, say organisers

-

THERE is going to be no Velothon in Wales next year.

Organisers said yesterday that there are no plans to run the event in 2019. They said it came after “detailed discussions” between the owners, the Welsh Government and Run4Wales.

Last year, more than 8,000 riders took part in the event across three distances in searing heat in the middle of the summer heatwave.

The event saw the closure of roads in Cardiff, Newport, Torfaen, Monmouthshire and Caerphilly.

It is understood that despite a successful 2018 event, organisers could not risk numbers declining for a third year with the large financial burden of closing 140km of road.

The statement added: “Despite a successful event in 2018 it is unfortunate that we are unable to find a sustainable model for future events. The event showcased Wales at its best and welcomed UCI professional road racing alongside 40,000 amateur riders, who were given a truly unforgettable experience on closed roads between 2015 and 2018.”

They also thanked the people of Wales for making the event possible.

There are still Velothon events in Berlin, Hamburg and on the Sunshine Coast in Australia.

A Welsh Government spokeswoman said the event had raised the profile of cycling.

She added: “With Welsh Government support over four years, Velothon Wales became one of the most popular mass participation events in the sporting calendar. The profile of cycling in Wales has increased during this time, partly due to this and other supported events, and it is hoped that the strong partnerships developed and experiences gained can be taken forward on future projects.”
