Springboks hotel evacuated over package

-

SOUTH Africa’s team hotel was evacuated the day before the game with Wales after a suspicious package was found in laundry belonging to one of the players.

A clock was found among one of the South African team’s belongings at the Hilton Hotel in Cardiff city centre, MailOnline reported.

Further suspicion was aroused when a burka was reportedly found among a player’s belongings.

The incident occurred on Friday, the day before Wales’ impressive 20-11 win over the Springboks. The discovery was made while the players were training at the nearby Principality Stadium.

MailOnline report the burka was brought to be worn on a night out in Cardiff after the game.

The discovery prompted a partial evacuation of the hotel and police were called and spoke with members of the squad.

Three of Rassie Erasmus’ players were said to have been warned by officers.

A statement from the Hilton Hotel Cardiff said: “At 2pm on Friday, November 23, there was an incident where our housekeeping team discovered a suspicious package in one of the bedrooms.

“She notified hotel management and, as per our protocol, we evacuated bedrooms above and below the floor in question and contacted the police immediately.

“They investigated promptly and, fortunately, quickly gave the all-clear.

“Our guests’ safety is naturally of paramount importance but we are sorry for any inconvenience and we’re grateful to South Wales Police for their swift response.”
