THE THREE-STEP CURE FOR CITY’S AWAY-DAY BLUES:

THOMAS STANDS DOWN AS NEW MAN JONES TAKES OVER THE ARMS PARK HELM

-

CARDIFF Blues have confirmed that Peter Thomas will officially stand down as the region’s chairman from January 1.

Thomas, who has been at the helm of the business since the game went professional, will hand over the reins in the new year but remains a director and life president at the Arms Park.

Taking over from Thomas is Alun Jones, who has been operating as the managing director of Hugh James solicitors – who advised the WRU during the Dragons takeover – for the last eight years.

Cardiff born and bred, Jones has been a Cardiff Blues season ticket holder and has been a fan of Cardiff rugby dating back to the 1980s.

He will combine his role at the Cardiff Blues with the one he holds at Hugh James.

Blues are confident there will be no conflict of interest between his roles in advising the WRU and leading the region. Thomas stands down as Welsh rugby heads towards ‘Project Reset,’ the name given to the proposed fresh start for the professional game in Wales, and a shift away from private benefactors bankrolling the regions.

“The journey over the last 22 years has had its ups and downs but it is one I have been privileged to be part of and thoroughly cherished,” said Thomas.

“The club has played a massive part in our lives and will continue to do so. Our vision is to take this region back to the top of European rugby.

“I would like to thank the shareholders and supporters for the immense support and loyalty they have given me.”

As Thomas stands aside, Jones knows he has a tough act to follow.

“I am delighted to have been given the opportunity” said the 48-year-old,

“I’m looking forward to rolling up my sleeves.”
