Investigation after man fell from bridge following police chase
A MAN suffered serious injuries after falling from a bridge onto the M4 following a police chase.
South Wales Police were in attendance at an incident on the A4119 near Cardiff at around 10.35pm on November 16, where a man fell onto the hard shoulder of the motorway. The 27-year-old man suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital.
The incident is being investigated by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
An IOPC spokeswoman said initial information shows the 27-year-old man crashed into another car on the A4119 during a police chase.
He then left the car, climbed over the bridge and landed onto the hard shoulder. A second person was also taken to hospital following the incident.
The spokeswoman added: “We are investigating prior South Wales Police contact with a man who suffered serious injuries on November 16 on the M4 near Cardiff. Initial information shows the 27-year-old man, who was driving a Vauxhall Zafira, was involved in a collision with another vehicle on the A4119, during a police pursuit.
“He then left his vehicle, climbed over the motorway bridge barrier and suffered serious injuries after landing on the hard shoulder. Our investigation will look at the prior police contact and whether officers followed local and national guidelines and policies.”
The IOPC initially assessed the referral but is now investigating.
At around 11pm on November 16, police stated they were at an incident on the M4 and the road was closed between junction 32 and 34 westbound. At around 2.30am on November 17, police said the motorway had reopened.
