Proposals for new primary on site of former school
A NEW primary school for at least 240 pupils is set to be built on the site of a former school in Merthyr Tydfil.
The former Vaynor And Penderyn School site and Godre’r Coed playing fields in Cefn Coed would also include a car park and a multi use games area (MUGA) if the plans are given the go ahead.
The proposed school would replace the existing Ysgol-y-Graig Primary School in Brewery Lane and Trefechan Nursery.
It has been designed to cater for more than 240 pupils including the nursery places.
The former school building was demolished in 2012 and the Godre’r Coed playing field is currently used as a rugby pitch and also old tennis courts which is where the games area would be built
The application has been recommended for approval by planning officers.
They say the building and outdoor spaces would provide a learning and recreational environment that would hugely benefit both pupils and the community.
They add that the development would bring a visually poor site back into use and by doing so introduce a distinctive building that would positively add to the character and appearance of the area.
They say it could be constructed without having an adverse impact on highway or pedestrian safety and while the concerns of local residents are fully appreciated, it is considered that the development would not significantly harm their amenity.
But the council has received 10 letters of objection to the plans for the school.
Merthyr Tydfil council planning committee will consider the application at its meeting on Wednesday, November 28.
