Festive films at the castle

Cardiff Castle’s pop up cinema is back for Christmas. We take a look at what’s on the cool yule movie list...

THERE’S nothing like watching a good festive film to get you in the mood for Christmas. Cardiff Castle is hosting its latest cinema pop up this December and it’s showing three film favourites all in one day.

The pop up takes place on Sunday, December 16, and it launches with the Macaulay Culkin 1990 hit Home Alone.

There are two screenings – at 10.30am and 2.30pm – and while the latter is already sold out, there are tickets left for the earlier showing.

There are also three chances to see Will Ferrell as the lovable Elf – 12.30pm, 4.30pm and 8.30pm. Once again, there are only tickets still available for the final screening.

The third offering is Gremlins, which will be screened at 6.30pm. Tickets were still available at the time of going to press.

For those of you who need a reminder, Home Alone features Culkin as bratty eight-year-old Kevin McCallister who plays up the night before a family trip to Paris, so his mother (Catherine O’Hara) makes him sleep in the attic.

After the McCallisters mistakenly leave for the airport without Kevin, he awakens to an empty house and assumes his wish to have no family has come true.

But his excitement sours when he realises that two con men (Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern) plan to rob the McCallister residence, and that he alone must protect the family home.

Meanwhile, Elf (released in 2003) stars Will Ferrell as Buddy who was accidentally transported to the North Pole as a toddler and raised to adulthood among Santa’s elves.

Unable to shake the feeling that he doesn’t fit in, the adult Buddy travels to New York, in full elf uniform, in search of his real father.

As it happens, this is Walter Hobbs (James Caan), a cynical businessman. After a DNA test proves this, Walter reluctantly attempts to start a relationship with the childlike Buddy with increasingly chaotic results.

Finally, Gremlins is the 1984 film about a gadget salesman who is looking for a special gift for his son and finds one at a store in Chinatown.

The shopkeeper is reluctant to sell him the mogwai but sells it to him with the warning to never expose him to bright light, water, or to feed him after midnight.

All of this happens and the result is a gang of gremlins that decide to tear up the town on Christmas Eve.
