A GOLF club in Cardiff won a major international competition – and pipped the top club in the UK to win the title.

Creigiau Golf Club, based on Llanwit Road, won the Matchplay Golf event sponsored by Annodata, at Montecastillo Golf Resort, Cadiz, in Spain.

The five-man team, made up of Owain Lewis, Lloyd Forward, Neil Ford, Jorge Randall and Nick Voleinik, started the competition back in March.

But after five rounds, the team won the chance to take a trip to Spain to take part in the semi-final – and then the long-awaited final.

Match captain, Howard Edwards, said it was a close competition.

The retired financial worker, 72, said: “We played five rounds against different clubs from South Wales, then from the west of England, a team from Swindon and ended up playing a team from Ascot, which enabled us to qualify for the last four teams in the competition.

“We got to go to Montecastillo in Spain where we had to play a semi-final and a final. In the final, we played against one of the biggest clubs, Wentworth in Berkshire.

“They’re one of the most prestigious clubs in England.

“The match was very close. We won the match by three games to two. It came down to the last game.”

The team were delighted with their win, and now a trophy is sitting in their clubhouse for all to see.

“It was fantastic,” Howard said. “The event has been running many years.

“It used to be called the Mail on Sunday. It’s currently sponsored by Annodata.

“In 1998, we won the Mail on Sunday competition in Spain, but it was near Marbella.

“I believe we are the only club to have won the event twice. I’m almost 100% certain we are the only club in Wales to have won it twice.

“We are all very proud. For a small village club like Creigiau, it’s an amazing thing to win once, but to win twice is unbelievable.

“We’re all absolutely thrilled and delighted that we brought home a beautiful trophy.” for
