Scout hut set to be rebuilt thanks to your donations
A SCOUT hall in Cardiff is set to be rebuilt, thanks to the generosity of locals.
The 2nd Llandaff Scouts, who meet at the Methodist/URC Christchurch in Llandaff North, were told they needed hundreds of thousands of pounds to purchase their hall in 2016 or they would have to find somewhere else.
But after almost two years of fundraising, they managed to raise the funds and re-opened the hall in July 2017.
However, a year later, more problems crept up.
Scout leader, Abbie Gibbins, 39, said: “After our magnificent effort to buy it, we had a problem with the plaster on the roof. It cracked and big lumps had started to come down.
“The first thing we did was try to find a builder and we were told it would cost £25,000.
“I put a post on Facebook and someone recommended JPS Building Services.
“He gave us a price but agreed to do it all at cost price.
“The fact he was a current Scout leader meant we were in safe hands.”
But that wasn’t the end of the good fortune.
“He went to Travis Perkins and they agreed to give us all the building materials at cost price and throw in scaffolding towers for nothing which would have cost us hundreds,” Abbie said.
“Then we had a problem with the insulation. They wanted about £5,000 which was out of our budget.
“We got in touch with Rockwool, an insulation company, and they donated enough insulation to cover the entire roof – around 120sq m.
“The insulation is set to be delivered on pallets but they need to be taken down and put in a lorry.
“I got in contact with Palletways and spoke to a man called Sam.
He said ‘we can do it for you for nothing’.”
Abbie said she was stunned by all the generosity to get the Scout hall working again.
“I am constantly blown away buy the generosity by people in the community,” she said.
“People will just go out of their way to help.
“We’ve already had so much. “For people to be able to support us is incredible.”
