RHOD GILBERT has added a sixth Cardiff show to his comeback stand-up tour in 2019.

The latest date will be at the Motorpoint Arena on Saturday, June 8 next year.

The show, called The Book of John, was first announced in July, and will be Gilbert’s first stand-up tour since 2012.

The comedian initially announced just two shows at Cardiff’s Motorpoint Arena, but he will now perform at the venue a total of six times, having added four shows due to popular demand.

When the tour, which kicks off in February next year, was first announced, every ticket for every show in Wales - at the Motorpoint Arena, Swansea’s Grand Theatre, William Aston Hall in Wrexham and Llandudno’s Venue Cymru - sold out barely an hour after going on sale.

The demand to see Gilbert back on stage comes after he spent the last six years mainly working on television and radio projects. There have now been eight series of the award-winning Rhod Gilbert’s Work Experience, and he also hosted Never Mind the Buzzcocks in 2014.

Since 2016, he has been the host of popular BBC2 show The Apprentice: You’re Fired, and appeared on other comedy shows such as 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown and Taskmaster.

Although the Carmarthen-born standup has performed in numerous charity gigs, The Book of John will represent his first stand-up tour in seven years. But it was one of those charity gigs that convinced him to go back on the road, after admitting that he wasn’t that bothered about it.

“To be honest, I never thought I’d go back to stand-up,” he said.

“But doing a charity show last year alongside Michael McIntyre, Greg Davies, Lloyd Langford, Angela Barnes and Nick Helm made me realise how much I’ve missed it.

“I had to write some stuff for that show so it kind of just went from there.

“I’ve been doing some work in progress gigs and basically having a ball; it’s like I haven’t been away.”

Gilbert will perform at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff on May 9, May 10, May 11, June 6, June 7 and now June 8.

Tickets are on sale now.
