City streets featuring on famous board game

- WILL HAYWARD Reporter will.hayward@walesonline.co.uk

CHRISTMAS is fast approaching and for many people that means time with the family.

During this period families will eat, drink and possibly play a board game or two. One game which is guaranteed to get tempers raised is Monopoly.

Most people will probably be most used to playing with the London version of the game. In the original Old Kent Road is the cheapest and Mayfair is the most expensive.

However there is a version for the Welsh capital as well.

We took a look to see which parts of the city made the cut and which is considered the most expensive.

■ The browns – Chippy Lane and Roath Park

Traditionally Old Kent Road and Whitechapel Road may get a bad reputation for being the cheapest on the board but they are a low-cost way of getting some hotels down early.

In the Cardiff version these two are Chippy Lane, the haunt of many a drunk person, and the beautiful Roath Park.

■ The blues – Bute Park, St Fagans Museum and Norwegian Church

Despite the blues not being considered the most affluent in the original, the Cardiff version are absolutely gorgeous.

■ The pinks – Cardiff City FC, Cardiff Blues and Glamorgan Cricket.

They may “always be blue” but it seems the Warnock’s boys are a slightly different colour in the game.

■ The oranges - Techniquest, National Museum and City Hall.

It seems the makers of the game rank education slightly higher than sport!

■ The reds – Clark’s Pies, South Wales Echo, The Senedd

Government, pies and an excellent newspaper make up the red tiles. Nice link that Fleet Street and the Echo are the same tile.

■ The yellows – St Davids Hall, New Theatre, Wellfield Road

Originally Leicester Square, Coventry Street and Piccadilly make up the yellow squares. In the Cardiff version it is two theatrical venues and a hipster hot spot. ■ The greens (not the political party) – University of Glamorgan, Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Millennium Stadium

Perhaps time for a new version of this game as the University of Glamorgan is now the University of South Wales and the best stadium in the UK is now named after a building society.

■ The purples - Cardiff Castle, Millennium Centre.

The Cardiff equivalent of Mayfair and Park Lane are Cardiff Castle and the Millennium Centre.

There are probably more knights of the realm on the London street than Cardiff Castle to be fair.

■ The utilities – Swalec Gas and Electric

Couldn’t really be anything else could it?

■ The “stations” – Cardiff International Airport, Cardiff Bus, Cardiff Bay, bus station

In many ways this part of the game is ahead of its time. Remember when we had a bus station...
