All’s Well for Pexton as the Quins can finally celebrate a first victory

-

THERE was no prouder man in Welsh rugby last weekend that Dick Pexton, the President of Cardiff Harlequins.

Finally, after 10 games, he saw his side pick up their first win in Division 2 East Central as they ran out 29-12 winners at home over Taffs Well.

It was just the pick-me-up that the former club captain, and the club as a whole, needed after a bleak start to the winter.

The season at the Diamond Ground started with a bit of promise with a thrilling 29-29 draw at home against Abercmwboi, but after that there were nine defeats in a row to test the patience of ever the most died in the wool supporters.

“It has been a tough old season for us, but the coaches and players have stuck to the task and they really played well to beat Taffs Well,” said Pexton.

“It was a bit of a crunch game because they are only one place above us in the table.

“But the other good thing is that we were able to field three sides and then had a full session of mini-rugby at the club on the Sunday.

“We know where we fit in the scheme of Welsh rugby and we are delighted to be offering players of all ages and abilities the chance to play.

“I’ve been at the club since 1964 and we are looking to celebrate our centenary in four years time.

“There have been plenty of great moments in our history and we hope to create many more moving forward.

“We are incredibly proud of our past, which includes having produced a number of Welsh internationals via Cardiff High School, and the former International Rugby Board and WRU chairman Vernon Pugh was a club stalwart.

“And only last week one of our former captain, Alun Jones, was named as the new chairman at Cardiff Blues.”

The Quins will now be hoping to extend their winning sequence, although they now face their toughest task of the season so far this weekend with a trip to unbeaten St Peter’s.

The ‘Rocks’ made it a perfect 10 out of 10 last weekend with a hardfought 22-15 triumph at Llanishen in another Cardiff derby.
