Premier cup tie for Welsh winners

NEWPORT County or Wrexham will host Premier League outfit Leicester City in the FA Cup third round.

The Exiles and the Dragons were paired together in the second round but could not be separated when they met at the Racecourse Stadium on Saturday night.

Following a 0-0 draw in North Wales, the pair will face off at Rodney Parade in a replay next week in a bid to earn their place in round three, as well as scooping £54,000 in prize money.

And the victor of that encounter will welcome 2015/16 Premier League winners Leicester to their home patch in the third round of this season’s competition.

Wrexham could well go into next week’s crunch cup encounter at Newport with a new manager following the departure of Sam Ricketts.

The former Swansea City and Wales defender missed the stalemate with Newport on Saturday due to speculation surrounding his future, with the Dragons confirming on Monday afternoon that he had left the club to join League One side Shrewsbury Town.

Elsewhere, Cardiff City have been drawn to face League One outfit Gillingham at the Priestfield Stadium.

The Bluebirds have not faced Gillingham since the 2004/05 campaign where they earned a win and a draw from their two meetings with the Gills.

As for Swansea City, they were also given an away tie, with Graham Potter’s men set to face Dean Smith’s Aston Villa at Villa Park in the New Year.

The Swans have already visited Villa Park this term, with the club’s former striker Tammy Abraham netting the only goal of the game to secure a 1-0 Championship victory for the Villans in October.

Current holders Chelsea will host Nottingham Forest at Stamford Bridge while other notable ties see Wolves take on Liverpool at Molineux, Solihull Moors or Blackpool face Arsenal and Manchester United clash with Reading at Old Trafford.

Ties will take place on the weekend beginning Saturday, January 5.
