Treorchy win as sides go down to 14

-

THERE was no quarter asked or given at Porth Quins where two players received their marching orders as Treorchy came from behind to move up to sixth in Division One East Central with a 20-14 victory.

The hosts led 7-3 at the break after a first-half that saw Leon Rowlands and Treorchy’s Cerith Lloyd dismissed after ‘a coming together’.

Three second-half tries, two from centre Lloyd Williams and the other from wing Steff Jones, saw the Zebras home.

Jordan Lloyd added a conversion to his first half penalty for the visitors, while the home points came from tries by back row men Rob Fownes and Elis Pari. Josh Waughington converted both the home tries.

The Quins haven’t won since December 29 and have slipped to 10th in the table. The two clubs are due to meet again at The Oval on March 30.

The only other game in the division last weekend was at Dinas Powys, where Bridgend Athletic came out on top. Tries from centre Tom Davies and scrum-half Dan James, both converted by Aled Thomas, earned the visitors a 14-3 win.

Defeat ended a run of four home wins for Dinas Powys, who were last beaten on The Common by Rhiwbina on 10 November. Their only points of the game came from a penalty by full-back Ben White.

In One East, Brynmawr increased the pressure on the top two as they also ran in seven tries in a 47-17 home triumph over Dowlais.

Zach Stewart bagged himself a brace with Ryan Gardner, Ethan Phillips, Mitchell Rankine, Tom Bainton and Nathan Preece also among the scorers for Brynmawr. Dan Butler kicked the rest.
