Seaside town’s historic toilets to reopen

-

THE Grade II listed public toilets in Porthcawl will reopen next week under the town council’s management.

The historic John Street toilets were closed at the start of January as part of Bridgend council’s cost-cutting plans.

Now they will reopen on Monday as Porthcawl Town Council works to finalise a community asset transfer (CAT) for the toilets from the local authority.

Town mayor and county councillor for Nottage, Norah Clarke said: “We are taking on a licence in order to run them while the CAT transfer continues.

“We are still waiting for the condition survey results of the building.

“The temporary toilets have been very well used, with traders and members of the public saying how wonderful it is to have them.”

The temporary toilets were placed nearby around three weeks ago with councillors taking it in turns to keep them clean.

Thousands of people signed a petition in September against the closure with a protest outside the toilets taking place in October.

Bridgend council said the only way to save the facilities was if Porthcawl Town Council took charge of them.

At the start of the year public toilets at Griffin Park, Cheapside in Bridgend and Maesteg Bus Station also closed.
