New protest over climate change set to take place

PLANS for the next climate protest to be held in Cardiff have been revealed.

Unlike the one on Castle Street that brought parts of Cardiff to a halt this one is not being organised by Extinction Rebellion.

The demonstration will be an escalation of the youth climate strikes which saw hundreds of children refuse to go to school and instead protest outside the Senedd.

The protest is planned for September 20 and will be a general strike.

Not only will children be striking but they are calling on adults to join them to face the challenge.

UK Student Climate Network activist Ali Shadjareh said: “Young people are calling for adults, from trade unionists to those working in the health services, right the way across the UK to join the global climate strike in September.

“This will be a pivotal moment to make sure that those in positions of power hear our voices loud and clear. We need urgent action on the climate crisis immediately.

“Which is why we’re calling for equitable solutions like a green new deal that will have economic, social and climate justice at its heart.”

The protest will involve strikers skipping work and meeting in Cardiff’s civic centre to demonstrate against the lack of action on behalf of government.

According to the organisers the week “will be punctuated by a variety of climate-related direct actions and activities around the world”.

This will be highlighting the recordbreaking heat waves in the Arctic and India, to wildfires, floods, famine and drought.

As with the previous youth strikes the Cardiff protest will be one of a set of global demonstrations.

According to the organisers they will be upping the volume and intensity of the protests over the coming years.

A spokeswoman for the organisers said: “This is just the beginning. Plans are already in place for further action to continue pressuring governments and corporations.

“The next wave of internationally coordinated actions begins in October with the first materialisation of what will continue into 2020 as a convergence of many organisations united as a movement of movements, marking a turning point in human history.”
