A MAN who died after a crash in Pontypool has been named locally as amateur boxer Shane Thomas.

The 22-year-old died at the scene when a white Renault Kangoo van collided with a parked vehicle in Wainfelin on Monday evening.

In a tribute posted online, Torfaen Warriors Amateur Boxing Club coach Simon Weaver described Mr Thomas as a previous British and Welsh title winner who had taken part in more than 40 bouts.

He said: “Last night I received terrible news one of our boxers had been involved in a car accident and passed away.

“Shane Thomas, who has just turned 22, was a big part of our gym, not boxed for a few years but still came to the gym and trained.

“Shane had a great boxing career, winning British and Welsh titles with over 40 bouts. All of us at Torfaen Warriors are stunned with the news as we are all a family.

“We will all miss you big man.”

In a Tweet, Boxing Wales said: “Amateur boxer Shane Thomas has passed away after being involved in a car accident.

“Shane was just 22 years old. He had over 40 fights in his amateur career, winning Welsh and British titles.

“Rest in peace, Shane. Our thoughts are with your family and friends.”

In a statement, Noddfa Baptist Church in Pontypool described Mr Thomas as an “inspiration to everyone”.

They said: “We would be grateful if you could join us in prayer for our local traveller community and dear friends of our pastor who are grieving the tragic loss of Shane Thomas (22) who died in a car accident last night.

“Shane was a gentleman, hard working and an inspiration to everyone at our local boxing club and wider community. He won the British title four times and did all that he could to support young talent.”

On Tuesday, Gwent Police issued an appeal urging motorists who used the road on Monday evening – especially an orange BMW that was in the area – to contact the force.

A spokesman said: “Officers are requesting any motorists who used the road yesterday evening around the time of the collision to please check any dash cam footage that may provide further information that will assist officers with their inquiries.

“We are particularly interested in speaking to the driver of an orange BMW that was in the area at the time and might be able to help with our inquiries.”

■ Anyone with any information or anyone who may have witnessed the incident is urged to contact Gwent Police on 101 or they can send a direct message via Facebook or Twitter, quoting log 500 of 5/8/19.
