Tucker’s luck is in for win

A 100-strong turn-out of anglers reeled in the smooth hounds, conger eels and even more pounds in cold hard cash when the latest Garry Evans Seamaster and Penn points qualifier was fished at Llanwit Major, Boverton and Marcross.

The event raised funds for Velindre Cancer Centre and the St Barruc Alzheimer’s and dementia ward at Barry hospital with £1,628 going to the two worthy causes.

And 45 anglers brought fish to the scales totalling 495kg in all.

First spot went to Swansea-based angler Shaun Tucker with a total weight of 39.45kg of hounds and eels.

He was fishing at St Donats and took home £250, which was donated by a mystery benefactor.

Runner-up for the second week in a row was Cardiff-based angling ace Roy Tapper. He was fishing at Boverton and weighed in 12 smooth hounds for 35.45kg picking up £150, which was also anonymousl­y donated. In third place was Bridgend angler Andrew Withey, who was also fishing at Boverton.

He weighted in 11 smooth hounds, a conger eel and a codling for 33.17kg taking home £100, donated by angling veteran Jeff Stephens.

In fourth place was Tonyrefail angler Rory Jenkins who fished the Chair at St Donats. He weighed in seven hounds and two eels for 27.94kg.

He pocketed £75 which was donated by Llanwit Major beach cafe owner Maria Hughes.

In fifth place was Chris Jenkins, fishing at Boverton, with eight hounds. He picked up £50 donated by Chris Davies Estates and Letting Agencies. Chris also picked up £82 pool money which was riding on the fifth position in the match.

The other £82 of pool money, which was riding on 15th position, went to Cardiff-based angler Steve Smyth with 12.23kg of hounds.

In the heaviest smooth hound section of the match, a fish of 7.98kg was caught by Tonyrefail angler John Griffiths.

He was awarded the WFSA smooth hound cup and picked up £100 donated by Ben Price, owner of BDP Heating in Haydock, Liverpool.

Junior winner was 13-year-old Dillion Brown, on his holiday from Llantwit Major High School. He caught two hounds for 7kg and won a beach-caster rod, donated by Roy Tapper.

In the pairs section of the match, 18 pairings fished.

In first place, winning £50 was Sukama Match Team members Andrew

Withey and Chris Jenkins, with a collective weight of 58.32kg.

Runner-up pairing was South Wales Match Team member Joe Arch and Roy Tapper with a joint weight of 53.1kg. They picked up £40.

This year sees the 40th anniversar­y of the Seamasters on October 13, since the Ron Cousins conception of the format back in 1979.

With three qualifying legs to go, it’s tight at the top with Justin Bird leading with 60.5 points.

A close second is Angling Ambitions rod builder Dave Llewellyn with 56 points, followed closely by Roy Tapper on 54 points.

Newport & District SAC fished their match at Severn Beach last week.

In first place was Dave Leader with two conger eels for 3.02kg.

Runner-up was club secretary Tony Hart with a single conger of 2.89kg.

Third spot went to Nathan Guscott with an eel weighing 0.68kgs.

This week’s match takes place on Saturday at Severn Bridge.

Booking in at the SARA carpark at 12.15pm. Fishing is 1.15-6.15pm.

Seaview Lads SAC fished Sully, with top spot going to Ada Harris with a bag of conger eels for 15lb 12oz. In second place was Steve Davies with a conger eel of 1lb 7oz. Third place went to Steve Doble with a strap conger eel of 1lb 2oz.

This weekend, the club take their annual bus trip to Porlock.

Gwent SAC fished their match in with the Llanwit Major Open.

In first place was Andrew Withey with 33.17kg of hounds, codling and an eel. Runner-up was Mike Mather with 17.41kg of hounds and an eel.

Third place went to Keith Skipper with two hounds for 6kgs.

This weekend, they have an eighthour match at Brixham fishing 9am to 5pm.

Dow SAC hold their monthly heaviest fish competitio­n this coming Saturday evening at Aberthaw.

Booking-in at the car park by 6.30pm. Fish times 7-11pm. Limits are west and east Aberthaw only.
