What lies beneath?
THREE WOMEN’S SEEMINGLY IDYLLIC LIVES IN THE LAKE DISTRICT MASK SECRETS BELOW THE SURFACE
THERE’S a roll call of award-winning actresses leading the cast for this intriguing new family drama series set in the Lake District.
Anna Friel, Sinead Keenan and Rosalind Eleazar play three women with very different lives and relationships, brought together at the school gates as their kids are similar ages. Each of the women has their own issues and struggles, which begin to overlap into each other’s worlds.
It’s one of those ‘who knows
what goes on behind closed doors’ shows – and it’s really quite promising. We don’t normally like to say ‘this is the new…’ or ‘the British version of…’ but there’s a definite hint of Big Little Lies here. Although instead of the vast glamorous beachfront properties of Monterey, there’s a slightly rundown semi in misty Troutbeck. And rather than designer power suits and skyscraper heels, we’ve got chunky jumpers, bobble hats and walking boots.
Their leading ladies are lawyers, artists and company owners: ours are physiotherapists and dog kennel owners.
But the issues these women are dealing with – struggles with motherhood, fidelity, financial security, identity – are very much universal. Each of them dealing with the fall-out of a bad decision or a wrong choice, a secret or an untruth, something which might seem unimportant, but can end up having huge consequences.
It’s a play on words, you see. Deep Water, like that stuff surrounding them in the Lake District, and also what they find themselves in thanks to all their dark secrets and lies.
Yep, it’s got layers.
