Tapper crosses border to claim another victory

IN-FORM South Wales angling ace Roy Tapper travelled just across the Severn Bridge to Aust this weekend and yet again pulled another win out of the bag in the Veals League golden peg match.

Fishing was difficult in the rain and strong winds, but his catch of two strap conger eels for 6lb 2oz was good enough to trouser £350, plus valuable Penn Points.

Surf Cast Wales were not affected too much by high winds this weekend when they held their monthly casting event at Southerndo­wn.

In between a mixed bag of rain, wind and sunshine, some good distances were laid down by competing casters. In first place across the board was Andrew Sheen, who recorded casts of 266, 269 and 251 metres in the respective 125/150/175 gram categories.

Newport SAC fished their match at Goldcliff, which was won by Dave Leader with three rays and a conger eel for 11.18 kg.

Runner-up was club secretary Tony Hart, despite taking a nasty fall on the rocks, with tworays for 7.55kg. Third spot went to Andy Clarke with a single ray for 3.60kg.

This week’s match is a club rover on the Sunday, booking-in is at The Mission for Seafarers at Newport Docks. Fishing time is 11.30am until 5.30pm.

Dow SAC held their heaviest-fish match at Porthkerry and Barry. Six anglers weighed in, with Gareth Potter taking top spot with a smooth hound of 2.65kg from Porthkerry.

Lewis Holbrow was runner-up with a conger eel for 2kg. Third place went to Dai Llewelyn with a conger eel of 1.55kg.

Gwent SAC managed to find a lull in the wind at Marcross this week where Bridgend-based Mike Mather won the match with two smooth hounds, a dogfish, a codling &and a bull huss for 8.41kg.

Second place went to Martin Jones with two codling and a smooth hound for 4.39kg. Neil Evans and his two conger eels claimed third position for 1.32 kg.

This week’s match is a 12-hour rover, fishing from 8.00am until

8.00pm.

Sea View SAC fished Nells Point to Rhoose Point. In first place was angling stalwart Don Cook, with a single smooth hound of 8lb 7oz.

Runner-up was Ada Harris with a codling and a smooth hound for 7lb 14oz. Micky Langford was third with a bag of conger eels for 4lb 10oz.

This week’s match is at Ogmore, booking-in at 11.00am at the top car park, fishing until 5.30pm. Then back at the West End Club for the weigh-in by 6.30pm.

South Wales Sea Anglers had to cancel their match at Morfa Beach Port Talbot due to high winds and surf.
