BOHEMIAN mum Dorothea Fields (Annette Bening) and her teenage son Jamie (Lucas Jade Zumann) share a ramshackle home in Santa Barbara with Abbie Porter (Greta Gerwig) and William (Billy Crudup), who is slowly renovating the property. This madcap menagerie of misfits is completed by waif Julie (Elle Fanning), the object of Jamie’s hormone-driven affections, who refuses to entertain his clumsy fumbles. Meanwhile, Dorothea grows concerned that she can’t provide for her son’s emotional needs and entreats Abbie and Julie to help her shepherd Jamie across the rubicon to adulthood.

KERMIT and co make a welcome return in this family comedy. A muppet called Walter (voiced by Peter Linz) lives with his human brother Gary (Jason Segel, left). When they visit Los Angeles they discover that scheming oil man Tex Richman (Chris Cooper) plans to bulldoze the Muppet Theatre. The only way to thwart Richman is to rally the troops.

ANDY DUFRESNE (Tim Robbins, left) is wrongly convicted of murdering his wife and her lover in Forties America. Winding up in Shawshank Prison, he encounters peril every step of the way. After making friends with Red (Morgan Freeman), he comes to adapt to life behind bars. One of the most acclaimed dramas of all time, this is tragic and uplifting.

AMERICAN HISTORY X Wednesday, ITV4, 10pm

AN Oscar-nominated Edward Norton, left, gives a brilliant performanc­e in this controvers­ial drama as a neo-Nazi who is sent to prison for the murder of an African-American man. Upon his release, he’s a changed man, but discovers his brother (Edward Furlong) is heading down the same path. He embarks on a mission to stop the teen from repeating his mistakes.

MAMMA MIA! Thursday, 5STAR, 7.45pm

SOPHIE (Amanda Seyfried, left) is poised to marry her hunky fiance Sky (Dominic Cooper) on an idyllic Greek island, but the blushing bride-to-be has no-one to give her away because her mother Donna (Meryl Streep) has never revealed her father’s identity. The plot takes a backseat to the Abba songs in this crowd-pleasing musical.

BERTIE (Colin Firth, left), the younger son of King George V, suffers from a stammer that makes public speaking an ordeal. His wife Elizabeth (Helena Bonham Carter) enlists speech therapist Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush) to help, but their sessions take on a new urgency when Edward VIII abdicates and Bertie faces the prospect of addressing a country.
