Leading up to a busy two months on the major competition scene, specimen hunter anglers have been out in force this week with some excellent species of fish being caught throughout South and West Wales.

Barry-based angler Gareth Griffiths, renowned for catching tope from the shore, travelled to the St David’s area of West Wales with his son Steen.

Yet again, he found his target species with a personal best tope of 55lb.

Eight-year-old Steen also achieved a personal best pouting of 2lb, a fish that has been on the decline over the years.

Large Dover sole up to 3lb have also been caught at the other end of the Channel in the Severn Bridge area.

Newport SAC’s match this week turned out to be a mixed affair at Goldcliff with Christian Tanner romping home with 8.58kgs of fish including a 5kg thornback ray and two conger eels.

South Wales Sea Anglers (SWSA) try once more to fish the popular hot spot at Morfa beach this coming Sunday after being blown off two weeks previously.

There are high expectations for this match as the beach has been throwing out large numbers of Smooth Hound throughout the summer.

Fishing commences at Mid-day and finishes at 5pm.

The walk to the mark is not for the faint hearted as it is a two to three mile walk to get the best part of the beach.
