Stage is set for a Gavin & Stacey musical

A MUSICAL stage show of Gavin & Stacey is being planned.

Ruth Jones, who co-wrote and starred in the hit Barry-set sitcom, is said to be in talks to finally bring an all-singing and all-dancing version of it to London’s West End.

The news comes just a few months before fans finally get treated to the show’s long-awaited Christmas special, which screens on BBC One on December 25.

Apparently, the series’ transition from screen to stage is already underway with everyone involved confident they’ll be able to pull it off, thereby replicating the success of other recent TV to theatre conversions such as Only Fools and Horses.

However, one of the programme’s main stars - James Corden - will not be involved in the production due to other work commitments.

According to The Daily Star, one source close to the show explained, “Ruth has already had some meetings about it, which have gone well.

“The next stage will be finding script writers and producers.

“The plan is to have more meetings in the new year. That will be a chance for the team to look at logis- tics, budgets, staging and dates. They also need to decide on a venue.”

The idea for a Gavin & Stacey musical has been on the cards since 2011, but it has constantly been put on the back-burner due to Jones and Corden’s busy schedules.

However, despite Jones being freed up by her hit Sky sitcom Stella having come to an end after six series, Corden’s role as US talk show host – he presents The Late Late Show on CBS - will see him unable to take an active role in developing the musical.

“James has given the project his blessing, but he won’t be helping make it happen,” added an insider.
