Woman threatened to ‘knock out’ police officer
A WOMAN lashed out at a police officer as he tried to arrest her and shouted at his colleague: “I swear I’ll knock you out.”
Tanya Palmer screamed and swore at the police before kicking an officer in the leg as they tried to handcuff her and put her in the back of a van.
Sentencing her at Newport Crown Court, Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke said: “This was a deliberate and determined assault on an officer.”
The court heard the defendant’s mother called police to Chepstow Road in Newport just after 11pm on August 5. She said her daughter would not give her bag back and there was medication she needed inside.
John Warren, prosecuting, said police found the defendant in her garden and she told them: “I don’t want to come with you.”
He told the court Palmer started shouting at the officers when they gave the bag back to her mother, accusing them of taking her keys. Prosecutors said she was told to “calm down” but started shouting: “I want my f***ing keys now.”
Officers said they did not have her keys and neither did her mother but Palmer “persisted” and was arrested for breach of the peace.
Mr Warren said the defendant continued to swear and would not go inside. She “lashed out” as officers escorted her to the nearby police vehicle.
Palmer kicked one officer in the knee and shouted at another officer: “I swear I’ll knock you out you f***ing b ****** .”
The defendant was given an eightmonth prison sentence, suspended for 24 months, in September 2018 for claiming more than £23,000 in tax credits she was not entitled to.
Palmer, 30, from Chepstow Road, admitted assaulting an emergency worker in breach of a suspended sentence.
Julia Cox, defending, said her client had made “extensive progress” on that sentence having completed all of her unpaid work by January.
Judge Lloyd-Clarke noted the arrest was lawful and the officers remained calm and polite throughout the incident.
Palmer was jailed for four months.
