Race to the Grand Final is hotting up

A BUSY two months for sea anglers in South Wales kicks off tomorrow with the first of three Garry Evans Seamaster qualifiers before the grand final on October 13.

The Welsh Federation of Sea Anglers are holding their annual pegged competitio­n at Aberavon this weekend with £250 going to the winner and nine other prizes up for grabs.

Size limits for all species of fish is 20cm operating on a catch and release basis.

Entry fee for seniors is £10 with two optional £1 polls for heaviest flat and round fish.

Junior entry is free where they have their own prize table kindly donated by Paul Osmond Haulage.

The draw for pegs commences at 2pm at the Four Winds Inn on Aberavon water front and fishing is from 4-8pm.

Angling ace Roy Tapper fished two club matches back-to-back last weekend and won them both with two impressive bags of fish.

In the Caerau SAC monthly match at Cold Knap and Porthkerry, Tapper took the top spot with a smooth hound of 15lb 11oz and a conger eel for a total weight of 18lb 5oz.

In second place was Mark Davies with his first-ever smooth hound of 8lb 2oz.

In third spot was Elliot Green with an eel for 6lb 1oz.

The club’s snowball prize of £113 was won by John Paul after a fivemonth period with a blonde ray of 4lb 2oz which he caught on Cold Knap pebbles. The next day, South Wales Sea Anglers fished their length/points per fish match at Morfa Beach.

It was the man-of-the-moment Tapper to reel in his second win in 24 hours with four hounds, a bass and eel measuring a total of 563cms to accrue 42 points.

In second place was Justin Bird with two hounds and a flounder for 244cms giving him 18 points.

Third was Nigel Putbrace with two hounds for 210cms and 14 points.

Newport & District SAC fished at St Brides with some good fish being brought to the scales.

In first place was Rhys Watts, with 5.18kg consisting of a thornback ray and two congers.

Runner-up was Steve Roberts with three congers for 2.96kg and two eels gave Dave Leader third place on 2.49kg

This Sunday’s match takes place at Redwick with booking-in at the Rose pub at 11.30am and fishing from 12.30-6.30pm.

Seaview Lads SAC fished a low water rover last week with Joe Gallivan winning the match with two hounds for 17lb 6oz.

Runner-up was Ada Harris with a bag of eels for 7lb. Third spot went to Roger Green with an eel and pouting for 1lb 13oz.

Gwent SAC fished their latest match at Marcross. Taking the honours was Martin Jones with five hounds and two eels for 21.16kg.

Second place went to Neil Owen with three hounds for 11.25kg. Third spot was secured by Craig Maddock with two hounds and a conger eel for 8.87kg.

Penarth SAC take to their local pier and beach on Sunday after the club’s summer recess. Booking-in commences at the pier from noon. Fishing times 1-5pm.

Llanwit Major specimen hunter Dean Downe took advantage of the good weather travelling to West Wales to fish his favourite mark.

Among the various species he caught was a massive three-bearded rockling weighing in at 3lb 2oz – potentiall­y beating the Welsh record by 4oz.
