Barry get busy before transfer window closes

-

THE Cymru Premier transfer window slammed shut on Monday and top-ofthe-table Barry Town were prominent in securing some significant signings which should add to their goal-scoring prowess.

Momodou Touray, who lit up Gavin Chesterfield’s forward line last season, has re-joined the Linnets from Newport County on another loan deal.

Touray has been at National League Torquay United since August, but it seems Mike Flynn sees Barry as the best prospect of bringing out the top form from his 22-year-old striker.

Cardiff City have also had dealings with Barry this week, and they have loaned out Sion Spence to the seaside club.

Spence was Cardiff’s academy player of the season last term and has also been on the first-team bench this season.

Spence and Touray should both go straight into Chesterfield’s squad tomorrow as Barry host Caernarfon Town at Jenner Park (2.30pm)

A Clayton Green 25-yarder gave Barry the three points they needed to go top last Friday against Carmarthen Town in a good 1-0 away win.

It should put the home team in a confident mood against Caernarfon, who produced good football and goals in their smart 3-2 away win at Airbus UK last weekend.

Cardiff Met University are level with Barry on the same points total – 10 from four games – and both teams have a plus-four goal advantage.

The students face a trip west tomorrow to play Carmarthen Town, who have started their season slowly in the points department.

The Old Gold are currently 10th in the table with just one point from four starts.

Last weekend’s 1-0 home victory over Newtown for the Met was courtesy of a Will Evans goal and Christian Edwards was keen to grab the three points with his students not playing as well as they have been of late.

The Met and Barry will look at tomorrow’s games as real chances to steal a march on TNS and Connah’s Quay Nomads as both clubs are playing in the Scottish Tunnocks Cup.

Both teams on form should prevail, but don’t dismiss possible upsets as the competition this season looks very hard to predict.

Penybont produced a sterling performance last Saturday and just went down by the odd goal at the home of champions TNS.

Rhys Griffiths’ new kids on the block went ahead with a Kane Owen goal only to see their lead slip to an eventual 2-1 defeat.

That leaves Penybont in 11th spot with just one point from four games, but those have included three of this summer’s European entrants from last season.

It doesn’t get any easier for Bont as they host Colin Caton’s Bala Town at the Kymco Stadium tomorrow.

Cardiff City youngster Ryan Reynolds is likely to make his Penybont debut against Bala, after signing for the Bryntirion-based club on loan in midweek.

In the Cymru South, Dane Williams’ and Cambrian and Clydach sit at the top of the table after a 3-0 Tuesday evening victory over Caerau Ely in the Rhondda.

Caerau, under the guidance of Craig Sampson, were more than holding their own in a goalless first period.

Early in the second half, Caerau went down to 10 men and Corey Shepard, Sam Johnson and Leon Jack put the game out of reach of a Caerau team who will look to get better as their season progresses.

Caerau face another difficult encounter tomorrow when they host ex-Welsh Premier Llanelli Town, who beat Afan Lido last weekend and eased their way into fourth place in the league.

Cambrian and Clydach will look to keep up their good form when they visit Cwmamman United.

Llantwit Major and Afan Lido will meet at Windmill Lane and both clubs will want to improve on defeats last weekend.

Pontypridd play Goytre United at home in a 11th v 12th clash.

Pontypridd were disappointed with their 3-1 defeat at STM last Saturday and Goytre lost 4-2 at home to Cambrian

Game of the day in this league could be Swansea University hosting STM Sports.

The impressive Ben Ahmun scored a brace again last weekend as the St Mellons team made their way to fifth in the table by defeating Pontypridd 3-1.

The Swansea students will be a tough nut to crack for STM and a draw could be a good result for Dale Gardiner’s team.

Taffs Well host Briton Ferry tomorrow at Rhiw Dda and Steve Williams’ Wellmen will go into the game in sixth place after a decent start to their campaign.
