City centre road to shut for up to eight weeks

- LAURA CLEMENTS Reporter laura.clements@walesonline.co.uk

ONE of Cardiff city centre’s main roads will be shut for eight weeks for emergency engineering works.

Welsh Water has announced Westgate Street will be closed from Sunday, September 22, to allow it to carry out work on a sewer.

The closure, which is expected to last until November 15, has been planned so works are completed before the next major event in the stadium and before the Christmas embargo commences.

A spokesman for Cardiff council said: “I understand this is a large amount of time considering it is within the city centre; however, due to the nature of the repairs required to the sewer this time is necessary.

“As always if the contractor repairs the issue before the planned end date then they will reopen the road as soon as possible, please rest assured this will be monitored daily.”

The works mean the road will be closed to through traffic from just below the Angel Hotel through to the Guildhall/ Golate. Traffic management marshals will man the gated points of entry 24 hours a day.

All residents, businesses, deliveries and NCP guests will still have access at this point if they approach from Castle Street and tell the marshals where they are going.

The majority of bus stops will continue to operate throughout the period and pedestrians and cyclists will still be able to use the pavement.

However, the taxi rank at lower St Mary Street will be closed to allow some temporary bus stops.

Engineers will work between 8am and 8pm on Monday to Saturday throughout the period, and slightly reduced hours on Sundays, from 9am-8pm.

Cardiff council traffic management staff and civil enforcement officers will be deployed in the area to manage and enforce the proposed closures.
