There’s no keeping up with the Jones boy

PORTHCAWL’S Chris Jones maintained his rich vein of form by netting the annual Welsh Federation Of Sea Anglers (WFSA) pegged open at Aberavon.

A total of 63 anglers turned up in the hope of bagging some Garry Evans Seamaster and Penn points in this measure and release match.

In total 25 anglers brought fish to the measure resulting in nine different species of fish being caught including bass, red gurnard, thornback and small eyed rays, smooth hound, whiting, dogfish, flounder and golden grey mullet.

Jones walked away with his second win from the last three of the Seamaster qualifiers with six thornback rays totalling 366cm.

It earned him £250 prize money donated by the WFSA.

Runner-up was Port Talbot angler Scott Buscher with 263cms of red gurnard, rays and dogfish.

He trousered £125 while Chris Read, from Cardiff, with 205cms of fish including a beautiful golden grey mullet for 49cm took third spot and also won the longest fish pool of £60 with a thornback ray of 77cms.

Fourth place went to Sakuma Match Team member Chris Jenkins with 166cms of thornbacks. He picked up £75 for his troubles.

In fifth place was Newport & District SAC angler Rhys Watts with 162cms of red gurnard and rays winning him £50.

In the junior section, with all prizes being donated by Paul Osmond Haulage Newport, was 13-year-old Aston Davies, who attends Pentre Hafod school in Swansea.

He caught three bass for 44cms and took home a £50 tackle voucher.

Runner-up was 12-year-old Jamie Brimfield, from Newport, who attends Newbridge Comprehens­ive.

He caught a flounder for 31cms and picked up a £30 tackle voucher.

Third place went to 10-year-old Oliver Jenkins, from Barry, with a bass of 15cm winning him a £20 tackle voucher.

The Garry Evans Seamaster points table sees four-times champion Chris Read go to the top with 67.5points.

Newport angler Justin Bird is in second spot with 60.5 points followed closely by angling ace Roy Tapper with 60 points.

The next chance to pick up points will be on the Sunday, September 22, at Cardiff foreshore where the South Wales Sea Anglers hold their annual open match.

Newport & District SAC fished their match at Redwick.

In top spot was Christian Tanner with two conger eels for 3.10kg.

Runner up was Rob Guscott with a single eel for 1.23kg.

Third place went to Roy Tapper with a Dover sole and silver eel for 0.98kg.

This weeks match is a low water rover on Saturday booking in at Mission to Seafarers Newport Docks from 10.30am, fishing 11am-5pm.

Gwent SAC fished in conjunctio­n with the match at Aberavon.

First place when to Nigel Putbrace with two thornback rays for 143cms.

Runner-up was Dai Loder with a small eyed ray and dog fish for 140cm.

Third place went to Mike Mather with two thornback rays and a smooth hound for 131cms.

Penarth SAC resumed their club fixtures after the summer break with Fred Chick taking the spoils at Lavernock Point with a 10lb conger eel and codling totalling 11lb 8ozs.

Second spot went to Brendan Davies from the pier with a conger eel of 6lb 4ozs.

Third place went to Ray Starling, who was fishing at Ranny Pool with a conger eel for 4lb 9ozs.

One cracking fish of note caught by veteran club secretary Bob Galley was a 3lb 2ozs Dover sole caught from his favourite spot on the pier.

Junior winner was Finnan Williams with a silver eel of 3ozs.

Seaview Lads SAC stayed locally at Sully and the Bendricks with Ada Harris taking the honours with good conger eel for 13lb 3ozs.

Runner-up was Steve Doble with a bag of conger eels for 10lb 1oz.

In third place was Roger Green with a conger eel for 4lb 2ozs.

Bargoed SAC held their latest length match at Llangennit­h beach in flat and sunny conditions with a mixture of golden greys, flounder and bass being caught.

In first place was Kevin Ashcroft with six fish for 186cm.

Runner up was Mal Hoskins with 127cm and third spot went to Alan Lewis with three fish for 107cm.

Dow Corning SAC fish their monthly heaviest bag match this coming Sunday at Sully and the Bendericks booking in at the Sully slipway carpark by 11.30am.

Fishing times: 12.15-4.45pm. Weigh in takes place at Sully sports club by 5.30pm.
