Politicians have made the country a laughing stock

- Jean Silvan Evans Peterston-super-Ely

HOW MUCH longer have we got to put up with these crass and inane British politicians? They have made their country a laughing stock and given plenty of ammunition to the equally stupid ones over the water in Europe.

These has-beens of Prime Ministers and politicians and so-called film stars are coming out of the woodwork like flies with their opinions. How many of them were truthful when in office? The latest rounds of party conferences are deplorable. The newlyelected leader of the Lib Dems, who is hardly wet behind the ears, is so full of her own ego that she’s likely to explode.

The only reason that Mr Cameron is bearing his soul is so he can sell his book; perhaps he should have done more while in office to reduce the drug culture in this country. He ran, instead of standing to fight while Mr Bercow was crying when he announced his resignation, probably due to the fact he will lose all his perks. Why should we also pay for the TV licence after the dreadful political showing at this year’s Last Night at the Proms? This is a quintessential British music festival not a political arena. Jamie Barton was a foreign guest to sing at this prestigious event not to flagwave for her individual sexual orientation.

I, for one, will no longer watch this performance in future if this is the sort of conduct displayed by those taking part.

Simple steps to protect your eyes

THIS Eye Health Week (September 23-29) we’re asking South Wales Echo readers to take simple steps to protect their eye health.

Despite the fact sight is the sense we fear losing the most, you may not know that half of all sight loss is avoidable.

Booking an eye test is a great way of making sure any eye conditions that could lead to sight loss are identified early. Also, make sure you find out whether there are conditions like glaucoma in your family, if so, it is important that you get your eyes tested more regularly.

Always protect your eyes from the sun by wearing sunglasses with the right protection levels, including CE, BS and UV400 marks. Keep your contact lenses clean by using commercially prepared solutions, never use saliva or tap or distilled water. Always remember to protect your eyes when cleaning, gardening or doing DIY.

Eating well, regular exercise and avoiding smoking can all benefit your eye health too.

For more information visit www. rnib.org.uk or to talk about sight loss contact RNIB’s helpline on 0303 123 9999.

People’s vote is the only answer

RIOTS on the street, food shortages, medical supplies unavailable. Problems foreseen in preparations for a no-deal Boris-Brexit in the Government’s Yellowhammer scenario, drawn up by the body responsible for emergency action in times of natural disaster or terrorism that now finds itself embroiled in plans

for a crash-out of the EU, the Civil Contingency Secretariat.

At least it’s realistic. Pity there is no comparable realism on the EU negotiations scenario. Boris Johnson says – constantly! – that he wants a deal. But one European leader after another is left to plead for some concrete and legal proposals to get things started. At least give us a clue, Boris!

This country is facing not a natural but a government-made disaster – thousands of people unemployed, food banks overwhelmed, traffic at a standstill. The whole economy will shrink and shudder. And people will suffer.

It is a government-made disaster that a general election won’t solve. Brexit is bigger than party politics. Both parties are deeply split on it. We do not need a general election. We need a people’s vote – and one untainted by the lies and fraud that dogged the last. Then, whichever way it goes, we can – no doubt limpingly – get back to party politics.
