Hugh’s the goal hero as Barry hit the summit

-

BARRY Town United climbed back to the JD Cymru Premier summit after a 1-0 win over Cefn Druids at Jenner Park yesterday.

Left-back Chris Hugh grabbed the only goal of the game four minutes before half-time with a driving run and finish.

Momodou Touray had earlier struck the woodwork while also had an effort saved by Druids keeper Michael Jones.

Sion Spence also brought a good save from Jones after the break, but for unbeaten Barry this was a fifth win from seven games.

Gavin Chesterfield’s side are a point above The New Saints, who had gone top temporarily on Saturday evening after coming from behind to record a thumping 6-2 win at Carmarthen Town.

The Old Gold shot out of the blocks and were two up against the champions after only 11 minutes thanks to Luke Bowen and a Jon Routledge own goal, but replies from Aeron Edwards and Greg Draper pulled TNS back level by the break.

Last season’s golden boot winner Draper added his second just after the re-start to turn the match on its head, with Edwards also netting again while a second half brace from Kurtis Byrne completed a resounding win.

Carmarthen are now bottom of the table and the only side yet to record a league win this season.

Cardiff Met, who won 2-1 at Bala Town, also remain unbeaten and are two points back on Barry in third.

The students had to come from behind though with Bala ahead through Henry Jones – but Met hit back through an Eliot Evans penalty and sub Dion Phillips.

Meanwhile the wait is finally over for Penybont who picked up their first win – at the seventh time of asking – 3-1 against Airbus.

Two for Curtis Hutson and one for Dan Griffiths secured it. Alex Darlington replied for Airbus.

Caernarfon made it six games unbeaten with a 3-2 win at Aberystwyth Town.

The Cofis led 2-1 at the break thanks to Noah Edwards’ opener and Nathan Craig from the penalty spot – after Joe Phillips has briefly pulled Aber level.

Leo Smith extended the lead after the break with Paulo Mendes grabbing a late reply for Aber.

Connah’s Quay Nomads remain undefeated this term after they drew 1-1 at Newtown.
